FTF West/WINNER works in the Cul-de-Sac and Matheux corridors and intervenes in the Mirebalais/Saut d'Eau area only to develop the mango value chain.

Mountain area strategies

  1. Support the development of high value and sustainable agriculture to considerably increase rural incomes through the multiplication of greenhouses and vertical agriculture, and free up space for agro-forestry and soil conservation initiatives;
  2. Stabilize hillsides and protect the productive plains through environmental governance to provide stability and increase security.
  3. Balance natural resource management with socio-economic development, including the focus of food security for upstream farmers.
  4. Continue with buffer zone activities, particularly through soil conservation and agro-forestry activities;
  5. Build water catchments and rehabilitate key feeder roads;
  6. Reduce post harvest losses and improve commercialization techniques through appropriate training, technical innovations and the installation of modern packing centers;
  7. Support producer associations and private entities interested in processing agricultural products and strengthen linkages between agribusinesses and farmer organizations; and
  8. Promote, strengthen and federate farmer associations and other organizations to be sustainable and perform as small enterprises.
  9. Promote biodiversity efforts, particularly in the Parc la Visite, to protect natural resources and integrate biodiversity into FTF WEST/WINNER activities.

 

Plain area strategies

  1. Intensify agricultural systems and modernize farming techniques for corn, rice, beans and plantain to increase food security, expand production and improve farmers' incomes;
  2. Rehabilitate, maintain and ensure the sound management and operation of key irrigation systems as well as key feeder roads;
  3. Develop and implement watershed management and contingency plans with farmer associations and local authorities; set up a flood early warning system;
  4. Reduce post harvest losses and improve commercialization techniques through appropriate training, technical innovations and the installation of modern packing centers;
  5. Promote and/or expand improved and innovative technologies to process and add value to key agricultural products such as mango and plantain, support agribusiness investments, and strengthen linkages with farmer associations; and
  6. Promote, strengthen and federate farmer associations and other organizations to be sustainable and perform as small enterprises.

 

Mirebalais and Saut d'Eau area strategies

FTF West/WINNER will continue to work in the region of Mirebalais and Saut d'Eau on the mango value chain, particularly to promote francisque mango value chain. Our strategy aims to:

  • Increase the production of exportable mangoes in the two communes by 10% to 15% compared to last year;
  • Control and reduce the propagation of diseases during production;
  • Improve local roads to better evacuate mango production;
  • Multiply mobile collection centers and disseminate modern equipment to reduce post harvest losses;
  • Help farmer organizations and private entities to process mangos; and
  • Assist producer associations in marketing and selling their products.
