Presentation of a management plan for the Cul-de-Sac watershed and zoning plan for the Cul-de-Sac plain

On November 19 and 20, 2012, the Interministerial Committee for Land Management (CIAT) and Feed the Future West/WINNER presented the first draft of a management plan for the Cul-de-Sac watershed and of a zoning plan for the Cul-de-Sac plain. The presentation took place at the Karibe Convention Center where representatives of the Government, state institutions, universities, civil society, municipalities, and communal associations were in attendance.

Inauguration of the Fruit Drying Facility in Mirebalais

 

 On Friday November 16, 2012, Haitian authorities and USAID inaugurated Haiti's largest fruit drying facility in the commune of Mirebalais, along with members of the private sector and representatives of peasant associations.

Three hundred thousand dollars (US$300,000) were made available to build the fruit drying unit, an activity implemented with the assistance of the Feed the Future WEST/WINNER (FTF WEST/WINNER) project. The modern equipment available at the unit will allow production of six thousand (6,000) pounds of dry fruit per month, which will be sold on local markets. FTF WEST/WINNER's objective is to intensify the agro-industry sector in Haiti, particularly in Mirebalais, which is one of Haiti's largest fruit producer regions.

On Saturday, October 13th 2012, on the International Day of Women Living in Rural Areas, the United States Ambassador, Ms. Pamela White, held a small agricultural and crafts fair. The fair was held at the Ambassador's residence with the collaboration of Women in Democracy and in the presence of the First Lady, Mrs. Sophia Martelly. Also present were Ms. Mimose Felix, Minister for the Promotion of the Peasantry; Mrs. Rose-Anne Auguste, Minister for Human Rights and the Fight against Extreme Poverty; and leaders of women organizations and delegations of farmer associations, particularly those assisted by the USAID Feed the Future West/WINNER project.

Haiti celebrates World’s Food Day

 

This year, World Food Day was celebrated in Haiti at the Parc Historique de la Canne à Sucre at the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture Natural Resources and Rural Development (MARNDR). Under the United Nations' theme « Cooperatives feed the world », this celebration aimed to increase the population's awareness on the role of agricultural entities, particularly of agricultural cooperatives, to increase food security in the country.
